February 19, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) can play a key role in resolving the Belarus crisis because this organization was created precisely to address such challenges, said the country\u2019s opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, speaking at an event on the sidelines of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly\u2019s winter session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s happening now in Belarus is a political and legal default.Human rights are denied. Elections became complete fraud. Security is breached. The country became a Russian pawn in the war against Ukraine,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She warned participants against legitimizing Belarusian ruler Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and credited the US for leading humanitarian diplomacy to secure the release of political prisoners. She pointed out that European sanctions also played an important role in forcing the Belarusian ruler to make concessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja urged OSCE countries to contribute to the international humanitarian fund that helps victims of political persecution in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe must show that the world stands with victims, not oppressors. We must support people, who sacrifice their freedom, their health for the very values that OSCE cherishes so much. Very soon, new releases could take place, and these people will need our support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The side event, \u201cBelarus and OSCE PA: Way Forward to Democracy and Humanitarian Priorities,\u201d was held in Vienna on the sidelines of the winter session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly taking place on February 19 and 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The session is attended by a delegation of the National Assembly of Belarus, namely Siarhiej Ra\u010dko\u016d, chairman of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on International Affairs; and Alieh Rumma, a member of the Council of the Republic Committee on International Affairs and National Security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
