February 26, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>Responsibility for Belarus’ complicity in Russia’s aggression against Ukraine lies with the country\u2019s military and political leadership headed by Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, Ihor Kyzym, former Ukraine\u2019s special envoy for Belarus, said on Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus \u201chas been and remains one of the most notorious totalitarian regimes,\u201d where all important decisions are made by a single person, he said, stressing that \u0141uka\u0161enka should bear criminal responsibility for crimes against the Ukrainian people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe entire population cannot bear responsibility for this crime of the regime. Legal responsibility must be \u2018personalized,\u2019 and that would be fair,\u201d the diplomat added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, many Belarusians \u201cgo to work at military enterprises every day\u201d or \u201csign contracts with the armed forces of the aggressor,\u201d Kyzym said, while acknowledging that others are fighting on Ukraine\u2019s side or supporting Kyiv in various ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI understand the \u2018sensitivity\u2019 of this issue and that the answer cannot be simple,\u201d he noted. “Finding an acceptable solution is in the interests of both our peoples. I am confident that we will come to a mutual understanding much more quickly than with the Russian people, who, poisoned by great power chauvinism do not realize where Putin’s regime has led them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February 2022, Russia started a full-scale war against Ukraine in which the Belarusian authorities supported the Kremlin, allowing Russian troops to attack Ukraine from Belarus on multiple occasions, supplying arms to Moscow and treating wounded Russian soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine imposed sanctions against \u0141uka\u0161enka. He also instructed officials to investigate \u201call the schemes by \u0141uka\u0161enka and his accomplices,\u201d pledging to counter Minsk \u201cmore tangibly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyiv will step up coordination with regional and global partners \u201cto ensure they fully understand what they are dealing with when it comes to the regime in Belarus,\u201d Zelensky stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
