February 27, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>Lithuanian customs officers seized a Mercedes-Benz truck from a Belarusian national who attempted to illegally bring 9,400 cigarettes into the country via the Kamienny \u0141oh-Medininkai border checkpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident took place in the early hours of February 25, as customs officers found contraband cigarettes in the driver’s mattress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cigarettes are estimated to be worth around \u20ac2,327, while the vehicle is valued at \u20ac15,390.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this month, Lithuanian authorities seized a Citro\u00ebn C5 from a Belarusian national who attempted to illegally bring cigarettes into the country from Belarus. The seizure should serve as a warning to cigarette smugglers that even small quantities of contraband can result in the seizure of the vehicle involved, officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smuggling caused significant tensions between Belarus and Lithuania last year. In late 2025, Vilnius declared an \u201cextreme situation,\u201d a low-level emergency over incursions of weather balloons that carried contraband goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cigarettes cost an equivalent of around \u20ac1 at stores in Belarus and are significantly cheaper than legally sold cigarettes in Latvia and Lithuania, where prices start at around \u20ac5. Smuggled NZ cigarettes can be bought at \u20ac2 per pack in Vilnius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
