March<\/strong> 4, <\/strong>Pozirk<\/em><\/strong>.<\/em><\/strong> <\/strong>The UN Human Rights Council (HRC) is to hold informal discussions on a Belarus resolution on March 4 and 9 during the session that concludes on March 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discussions have been initiated by the European Union delegation to the HRC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 12, the HRC will consider a report by the Group of Independent Experts on the Situation of Human Rights in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It says<\/a> that Belarusian authorities continue to systematically violate human rights by arbitrarily arresting people suspected of opposing the <\/strong><\/em>current government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe trials conducted do not respect basic fair trial guarantees. The repression of civil society organizations also continued unabated during the reporting period,\u201d the experts said, expressing concerns about several deaths of jailed dissidents since 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People held on politically-motivated charges and LGBT+ people continue to face discrimination and are subjected to harsher conditions of detention, they added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBelarusians are not safe even when they flee abroad,\u201d the report said, noting transnational repression targeting Belarusians in exile and journalists. Belarusian authorities keep branding exiled individuals and civil society organizations as \u201cextremists,\u201d opening criminal proceedings against them, seizing their properties, freezing their assets, trying them in absentia and persecuting their families in Belarus, according to the experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group urged Minsk to stop politically-motivated reprisals, to uphold the rule of law and human rights and seize all ongoing violations. \u201cBelarusians deserve to live in a country where they can freely express their opinions,\u201d it stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UN Human Rights Council established the Group of Independent Experts in April 2024 to investigate the circumstances and root causes of all rights abuses allegedly committed in Belarus since May 1, 2020. This includes the gender and age dimensions and the impact on victims and survivors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
