March 5, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Valeryj Capka\u0142a, a former Belarusian opposition presidential candidate, has met with another White House official in Washington to discuss ways to secure the release of political prisoners and prevent new arrests of dissidents, said the former diplomat turned politician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After his meeting with Charles McLaughlin, special assistant to the US president and senior director for European and Russian affairs at the National Security Council, Capka\u0142a noted that he discussed a solution similar to the one that had worked successfully in Venezuela.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA political amnesty in Belarus patterned after Venezuela and the closure of criminal cases would\u2026 contribute to the resolution of one of the biggest humanitarian tragedies of postwar Europe, when about half a million Belarusians were forced to flee the country fearing politically motivated persecution,\u201d the ex-diplomat said in his Telegram channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Capka\u0142a also suggested that Belarus should be included in a possible future peace deal between Russia and Ukraine with a focus on international security guarantees for Belarus, the removal of nuclear weapons, restrictions on foreign military presence and military exercises strictly in line with Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe mechanisms and the Vienna document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another Belarusian opposition politician, Dzianis Ku\u010dynski, an aide to pro-democracy leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, had met with McLaughlin in February 2026 and September 2025. He was accompanied by Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s husband Siarhiej Cichano\u016dski.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 3, Capka\u0142a, who had served as Belarus\u2019 ambassador to the United States from 1997 to 2002, met with Andrew Baker, US deputy national security advisor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
