March 6, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) called on<\/a> the Belarusian authorities to immediately release radio host Alieh Chamienka and stop jailing journalists for their work in a statement issued yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two days ago, a judge in Minsk sentenced famous folk musician Chamienka to three years in prison in connection with his work for the Belarusian-language radio station\u00a0Radyjo Racyja<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The frontman of the Pa\u0142ac folk band was found guilty of facilitating extremism because the station had been labeled by Belarus\u2019 security services as an extremist group among dozens of other blacklisted media outlets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cChamienka\u2019s three-year prison sentence marks the third conviction of journalists in Belarus in less than a week \u2014 a clear indication that the authorities have by no means eased the pressure on the press in the country,\u201d said Anna Brakha, CPJ\u2019s Europe and Central Asia senior researcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CPJ also said it emailed the Belarusian Investigative Committee for comment on the case against Chamienka but did not receive a reply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
