March 9, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Belarus must establish footholds in Africa to expand ties with African countries of interest to it, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has told Foreign Minister Maksim Ry\u017eanko\u016d following the diplomat\u2019s visit to Togo and Ghana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfrica is the future. You probably understand this better than anyone else in our country,\u201d the Belarusian ruler’s press office quoted him as saying. \u201cWe must remember that we are not an empire, we are not Americans and cannot cover the entire continent. We need to have footholds from which we can work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician mentioned Oman among key destinations in East Africa. \u201cThey still have good connections there from the old days,\u201d he said. \u201cThey know how to trade, you need to cooperate with them and they will invest, especially in the current situation, when no one needs the dollar anymore.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ry\u017eanko\u016d, who visited Togo and Ghana last week, announced that Ghana\u2019s President John Dramani Mahama is expected to come to Belarus in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus currently maintains diplomatic relations with 51 of the 54 African countries and operates embassies in Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Belarusian ambassadors are also accredited on a non-resident basis to 19 countries in Africa and the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus is to open an embassy in Oman before 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
