March 9, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> On March 5, the Minsk City Court sentenced five Belarusian volunteers of the Kastu\u015b Kalino\u016dski Regiment (KKR) to lengthy prison terms without the defendants being present, the Viasna Human Rights Center reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The KKR, which fights Russia alongside Ukrainian forces, has marked its fourth anniversary today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former Commander Dzianis Prochara\u016d, Pavie\u0142 \u0160urmiej, a member of the command, and Vadzim Kaban\u010duk, the regiment\u2019s former deputy commander now serving as the opposition\u2019s defense chief in the transition cabinet, were given 25 years in prison each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Charges against them ranged from discrediting the state and setting up a criminal group to conspiracy to overthrow the government, extremism and terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksiej Kaval\u010duk, an assault trooper at the Vo\u0142at unit, and KKR instructor Alaksiej Nazara\u016d were given 12 years in prison each. Both faced charges of participating in an armed conflict abroad, setting up an extremist group, facilitating extremist activities, plotting to overthrow the government and others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prochara\u016d, Kaban\u010duk and Nazara\u016d were ordered to pay fines of 31,500 rubels ($10,765) each; \u0160urmiej, 90,000 rubels ($30,760) and Kaval\u010duk, 22,500 rubels ($7,690).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March 2022, shortly after Moscow staged an offensive on Kyiv, Belarusian volunteers formed the Kastu\u015b Kalino\u016dski Battalion, which soon joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) and grew into a regiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime declared the unit a terrorist and extremist group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
