March 9, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Western countries baselessly fabricate a damning human rights \u201cdossier\u201d against Belarus at the UN Human Rights Council, Belarusian Deputy Foreign Minister Ihar Siakreta said during a briefing for Belarusian-accredited foreign diplomats in Minsk on March 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the foreign ministry, Siakreta described human rights as a topic for \u201cconstructive engagement\u201d rather than \u201cpolitical confrontation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Informal consultations on a draft resolution on the human rights situation in Belarus took place on March 4 and March 9 in the framework of the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 12, a fresh report on Belarus\u2019 human rights record by the Group of Independent Experts will be debated at the session. The report paints a grim picture in Belarus, accusing authorities of continuing to systematically violate human rights by arbitrarily arresting people suspected of opposing the current government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe trials conducted do not respect basic fair trial guarantees. The repression of civil society organizations also continued unabated during the reporting period,\u201d the experts say. People held on politically-motivated charges and LGBT+ people continue to face discrimination and are subjected to harsher conditions of detention, they add.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UN Human Rights Council established the Group of Independent Experts in April 2024 to investigate the circumstances and root causes of all rights abuses allegedly committed in Belarus since May 1, 2020. This includes the gender and age dimensions and the impact on victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group\u2019s previous report was discussed at the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council in March 2025, after which its mandate was extended for another year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
