March 12, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Roads of Belarus state program will receive approximately 19 billion rubles (some $6.5 billion) in funding over the next five years, Siarhiej Lavon\u010dyk of the transport and communications ministry has told journalists in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of the funding, 18 billion rubles, will be allocated from the state budget and is expected to cover repairs and reconstruction of at least 25,000 kilometers of public roads, including 500 bridges, the official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lavon\u010dyk singled out the bridge across the Prypia\u0107 river in Mazyr, Homiel region, as \u201cthe most interesting object,\u201d which is nearly one kilometer long. \u00a0Last year\u2019s renovation, covered by the state investment program, was reportedly completed in 24 months rather than the planned 30 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until 2020, Belarus largely relied on European funds and the World Bank to finance the construction and repair of roads and bridges. Since 2008, the country has received \u20ac5.3 billion for infrastructure projects, including roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) invested nearly \u20ac2.5 billion in over 100 projects in Belarus. However, the bank suspended funding for state projects in 2020, cutting off access to its financing in 2022 amid Belarus\u2019 internal political crisis and Minsk’s support for Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
