March 12, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Even amid global crises, Belarus must remain in the international spotlight as the country\u2019s human rights situation continues to deteriorate, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ale\u015b Bialacki stressed at a Belarus-themed discussion held yesterday in Geneva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus needs both a group of independent UN experts on the human rights situation and a special rapporteur, Bialacki stressed at a side event of the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC), the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery day, we record new cases of political reprisals, and the number of political prisoners keeps rising,\u201d Viasna\u2019s head said. \u201cIt is therefore crucial to continue systematic work at the international level, including documenting all violations, so that those responsible can be held accountable in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discussion stressed the need to support Belarusian civil society in its struggle for freedom and the rule of law, values promoted by the European Union at the current HRC session, which plans to adopt an annual resolution on Belarus in response to the country\u2019s worsening human rights situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The HRC established the mandate of the special rapporteur on Belarus in 2012 with annual renewals. Currently, Nils Mui\u017enieks serves in this capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Group of Independent Experts was set up in April 2024 to investigate the circumstances and root causes of all rights abuses allegedly committed in Belarus since May 1, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
