March 19, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on March 17 and 18 as a\u00a0man from S\u0142onim, Hrodna region, was arrested and faces criminal charges, most likely for following blacklisted opposition content. His wife is also held in custody, pro-government sources said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exiled investigative journalist Alaksiej Karpieka said on Facebook that Belarusian officials accused him of being a member of an \u201cextremist\u201d group and are seeking his arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Homiel Region Court sentenced Anton Kaza\u010denka to four years in prison in the Bie\u0142aruski Hajun case last month, the Homiel branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. The same court convicted Dzianis Namiestnika\u016d on extremism-related charges, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported. The man was likely given a restricted freedom term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judge in Brest sentenced D. Cyhanko\u016d to four years in prison for allegedly insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, inciting hatred and rehabilitating Nazism, the Prosecutor General’s Office reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Committee for State Security (KGB) branded Human Constanta rights initiative, Northern Lights film festival and Spad\u010dyna Belarusi (Heritage of Belarus) as extremist groups, according to the interior ministry\u2019s updated online register.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information ministry also announced extremist content designations for the website and social media pages by Mika\u0142aj Bura\u016d and his Suverenniy Mir<\/em> project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 17, police briefly detained Maryna Adamovi\u010d, wife of opposition politician Mika\u0142aj Statkievi\u010d released from prison last month after a stroke, a Telegram channel linked to Statkievi\u010d reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of March 19, human rights defenders identified at least 1,136 political prisoners, but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
