March 20, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarus\u2019 interior ministry has added 22 names to its list of extremists, taking the total of entries on the official register to 6,424.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The additions include designated political prisoners Alaksandar Bigiel, serving an 18-month prison term on defamation- and extremism-related charges, and Ilja Dzindzika\u016d, imprisoned for three years in the Bie\u0142aruski Hajun case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u017amitryj Via\u0142a\u016d, Dani\u0142a Cyhanko\u016d, Siarhiej Rabca\u016d and D\u017amitryj \u0141uhovi\u010d are serving sentences on charges ranging from inciting hatred to facilitating extremist activities.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sentences of 16 recently blacklisted persons remain incomplete, which means that they may be serving non-custodial terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among them is Jan Paciupa, also persecuted in the Bie\u0142aruski Hajun case. Others are Taras Biera\u017eny, \u015aciapan Hec, D\u017amitryj Mu\u0161ynski, Viktar Zubar, Alaksandar Stralecki, Kanstancin Fiodara\u016d, Pavie\u0142 Barazna, Michai\u0142 Masalevi\u010d, U\u0142adzis\u0142a\u016d Pu\u010dko\u016d, Anton Zota\u016d, Ihar Fiaducik, D\u017amitryj Burak, Siarhiej Zaruba, D\u017amitryj Ka\u0142tunievi\u010d and Arciom Majsiuk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of them were convicted on extremism-related charges that authorities increasingly use to persecute regime critics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People placed on the list of individuals involved in extremist activities are banned from any education- and publishing-related activity, as well as from holding state positions and from doing military service, for five years after completing their sentences or after the related conviction is deleted from the criminal record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their financial transactions are subject to close monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the crackdown on the 2020 postelection protests, authorities in Belarus equated criticism, solidarity, advocacy, the free media and free expression to extremism and terrorism.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
