March 22, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Authorities informed some of the recently released designated political prisoners that they will be subject to constant police supervision and other strict restrictions, the Rozovyye Kosynki <\/em>initiative reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former prisoners were prohibited, among other things, from using bank cards and obtaining or using SIM cards, it noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Any violation, even a minor one, such as alcohol consumption, could reportedly lead to re-imprisonment with potential placement in detention facilities during holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 19, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka pardoned 250 regime critics following his talks with John Coale, US special envoy for Belarus. Unlike previous pardons, which usually resulted in prisoners being forced to leave Belarus, 235 were allowed to stay in the country, while 15 were taken to Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of those who remain in Belarus, \u201c30 to 40 people may pose a threat, but they are under the control\u201d of the security services and the police, \u0141uka\u0161enka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volha Zazulinskaja of the opposition transition cabinet described this statement as \u201can open warning to people who have only just been released after years of unjust imprisonment, suffering and torture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe regime is making it clear that it will not set them free,\u201d she said, calling for the guarantees that liberated people have the opportunity to fully exercise their rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
