{"id":180620,"date":"2026-03-23T19:40:27","date_gmt":"2026-03-23T16:40:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/180620\/"},"modified":"2026-03-23T20:09:19","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T17:09:19","slug":"lithuanian-foreign-ministry-suggests-revoking-local-border-traffic-agreement-with-belarus","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/180620\/","title":{"rendered":"Lithuanian foreign ministry suggests revoking local border traffic agreement with Belarus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>March 23, <em>Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The foreign ministry of Lithuania suggests revoking the local border traffic agreement with Belarus, which was signed as far back as 2011 but never took effect, according to <em>Delfi<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ministry has drafted a directive that provides for requesting the president of Lithuania to submit a proposal to this effect to the Seimas, Lithuania\u2019s parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agreement allows residents of border areas of Belarus and Lithuania to cross into the other country\u2019s territory without a visa and stay within a designated 50-kilometer zone for up to 90 days within six months. The Seimas ratified the agreement in 2011, but it was never enacted, with Belarus claiming that Minsk \u201chad not been notified of the completion of domestic procedures\u201d required for its enactment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lithuanian foreign ministry argues that the agreement has been neglected for too long to be relevant for either side. Its revocation would be in line with the consistent foreign policy and the interests of the national security of Lithuania, the ministry was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Border tensions between Belarus and its neighboring EU countries have been running high for several years amid a surge in irregular crossings from Belarus and Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In December 2025, Lithuania declared an \u201cextreme situation,\u201d a low-level emergency over incursions of weather balloons that carried cigarettes from Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2010, Belarus signed local border traffic agreements with Poland and Latvia. The agreement with Poland was never put into effect, while the one with Latvia was enacted in February 2012, only to be suspended at Latvia\u2019s initiative in October 2022.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>March 23, Pozirk.
