March 24, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Officials from the General Staff, local executive committees and military enlistment offices have started a three-day exercise to improve command and control of territorial forces, the defense ministry’s press office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pavie\u0142 Muraviejka, chief of the General Staff of the Belarusian Armed Forces and first deputy defense minister, is in charge of the drill, which is expected to conclude in all six regions of the country on March 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exercise focuses on improving officials’ commanding skills amid current security challenges and threats, the official said, describing the territorial forces as \u201cone of the main pillars of Belarus\u2019 security.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Territorial troops, an auxiliary part of the Armed Forces, are formed in times of war or military-political tension of reservists with military training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three years ago, Defense Minister Viktar Chrenin announced that territorial defense \u201cis being transformed from a support system into a full-fledged combat one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian army is regularly conducting drills amid tensions with the West and Russia\u2019s full-scale war against Ukraine, in which Minsk supports Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
