March 25, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Belarusian people have never abandoned their quest for freedom, neither in 1918 nor in 2020, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has stated in her Freedom Day address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMore than a century ago, in 1918, Belarusians declared independence,\u201d she said. \u201cThey declared the right to be free. The right to speak their language. The right to choose their future. This historic day has become a symbol of hope and resistance against tyranny. Today, we continue that fight. Because Belarus is still not free.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c[Alaksandar] \u0141uka\u0161enka wants us to feel isolated. But we are not alone. We are strong and we are united,\u201d the politician stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja noted that Belarusians have long fought for freedom, both at home and in exile, citing the work of civic initiatives, volunteer groups, independent media, support for political prisoners and Belarusian volunteers fighting Russia alongside the Ukrainian Armed Forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI believe with all my heart that we will celebrate this day in a free Belarus soon,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Celebrated on March 25, Freedom Day marks the 108th anniversary of the Belarusian independence proclamation. The current Belarusian government does not recognize Freedom Day as an official holiday. After the 2020 presidential election, any attempts to publicly celebrate anniversaries led to arrests, trials and jail terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The state-run propaganda has been vocal in demonizing historical events related to the proclamation of the short-lived independence in 1918, banning all symbols linked to the first Belarusian state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Freedom Day events are taking place today in Vilnius with a rally announced for March 28 in Warsaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
