March 25, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Freedom Day is not only a commemoration of the past, but also a symbol of present-day resistance, the European Parliament said in its message<\/a> to Belarusians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt a time when Russia’s ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine is reshaping the security landscape of the region, and as Belarus faces increasing political, economic, and military integration with Russia, the very question of Belarus’s independence has become more pressing than ever. Freedom Day is therefore not only about remembering the past, but about safeguarding the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dzie\u0144 Voli (Freedom Day) marks the 108th<\/sup> anniversary of the proclamation of independence by the Belarusian People\u2019s Republic (BNR) in 1918.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

celebrations have been banned in Belarus since 2020, but Belarusians living in Lithuania, Poland, the United States and other countries mark Freedom Day with rallies, demonstrations, concerts and other events. Belarus\u2019 Investigative Committee has warned that Belarusians taking part in these events will face criminal prosecution and property confiscation in their home country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuanian President Gitanas Naus\u0117da also issued a statement on the occasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This day symbolizes your tenacity and determination to build a free, democratic, and pluralistic Belarus \u2013 a state where respect for human rights, the rule of law, and civil society is not a privilege of the chosen few, but an inseparable part of everyday life for everyone,\u201d\u00a0he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
