March 25, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Belarusians and the Ukrainians have \u201cone enemy \u2013 the Russian world, Russian imperialism and one ambition \u2013 a free democratic European future,\u201d Belarusian opposition leader Sviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja said in a video address televised at a conference in Kyiv on March 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja reiterated her line that the Belarusian people are on Ukraine\u2019s side in its war against Russia. \u201cProtests, sabotage against Russian troops, rail partisans, Bie\u0142aruski Hajun, volunteer activists, a \u2018point of invincibility,\u2019 volunteer fighters, dozens of whom gave their lives for Ukraine,\u201d she said. \u201cToday the Belarusian community abroad gives more money toward supporting Ukraine than to our own Belarusian projects.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Cichano\u016dskaja, the Ukrainians make a distinction between the \u201cregime and the Belarusians\u201d and understand that the Belarusian people \u201cstand together with Ukraine and not the aggressor.\u201d She expressed confidence that this would help preserve \u201cfriendly relations between our nations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja said that the Belarusians look to Ukraine \u201cwith great hope\u201d as a \u201cregional leader\u201d and a force on which the \u201cfate of Belarus depends.\u201d \u201cAnd I\u2019m glad that our relations with Ukraine are becoming stronger,\u201d she said. \u201cAt the last meeting with President [Volodymyr] Zelensky [in Vilnius on January 25] we agreed to continue cooperation. And I hope that I will soon be able to visit Kyiv and express our support in person. I also hope that Ukraine will appoint a special envoy for Belarus \u2013 this would strengthen our bilateral relations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja announced that the mission of pro-democracy forces in Kyiv would soon open an office in the Ukrainian capital city. She played up the efforts of the mission\u2019s head Sviat\u0142ana \u0160acilina and Vadzim Kaban\u010duk, the opposition cabinet\u2019s security chief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She strongly emphasized that \u201cbilateral cooperation should be institutionalized and long-term.\u201d \u201cWe have many issues that need to be resolved including support for Belarusian military units in Ukraine, the status of Belarusian refugees, volunteers, veterans and their families, accountability for those responsible for war crime against Ukrainian citizens, and the participation of Belarusians in the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja stressed that \u201cthere will be no safe Ukraine with free and democratic Belarus and no free Belarus without free Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja noted the role of Ukraine in the history of the Belarusian People\u2019s Republic (BNR), which proclaimed independence on March 25, 1918. \u201cHistorians agree today that the proclamation of independence by Ukraine in January [1918] became an impetus for the proclamation of the independence by Belarus,\u201d she said. \u201cThat is why it is symbolic that we are holding this forum on Freedom Day \u2013 the day Belarus appeared on the political map of Europe and the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opponents of Alaksandr \u0141uka\u0161enka widely celebrate March 25 as Dje\u0144 Voli (Freedom Day). No public events linked to the anniversary have been tolerated in Belarus since 2020, but Belarusians living in Lithuania, Poland, the United States and other countries mark Freedom Day with rallies, demonstrations, flower-laying ceremonies, concerts, parties and other events. Belarus\u2019 Investigative Committee has warned that \u201cextremist groups\u201d use the date for the \u201cdiscreditation of Belarus in the international arena,\u201d and that Belarusians taking part in their events will face criminal prosecution and property confiscation in their home country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
