March 27, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on March 25 and 26, as Na\u0161a Niva <\/em>reported the arrest of D\u017amitryj Sa\u0144ko, which appears to be <\/span>part of a wider crackdown on independent Belarusian publishers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sa\u0144ko worked as editor in chief at Technalohija, a Minsk-based publisher of books in Belarusian, which terminated operations earlier this month without specifying any reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities released Ale\u015b Ja\u016ddacha and Vac\u0142a\u016d Bahdanovi\u010d, arrested in early March as part of the crackdown on publishers. It is unclear whether they face any charges. Publisher D\u017amitryj Ko\u0142as and his daughter Vikroryja remain in custody, the Viasna Human Rights Center said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a separate development, a tractor driver in the Mahilo\u016d region\u2019s \u010cavusy district was given a restricted freedom term in an open-type correctional facility for sharing four pictures of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka on social media. The pictures were reportedly accompanied by insulting comments, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Committee for State Security (KGB) repeatedly branded the Nation of Leaders education initiative as an extremist group, according to the interior ministry’s website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past two days, Belarusian rights groups have added 21 new names to their list of political prisoners, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of March 27, human rights defenders identified at least 908 political prisoners, but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
