March 28, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Human rights defenders from the Viasna Human Rights Center reported a third suicide attempt by jailed dissident \u015aciapan \u0141atypa\u016d, who is serving eight and a half years in prison on charges widely seen as politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, during one of the court hearings, \u0141atypa\u016d had tried to take his life in protest against mistreatment behind bars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases of politically-motivated persecution documented in Belarus on March 27 included several arrests in Homiel at an authorized folklore event, the local Viasna’s branch said. Some of the arrested were reportedly fined, while one person was jailed for 15 days over alleged violations of regulations governing mass events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minsk City Court sentenced manager Illa Dzindzika\u016d to three years in prison on extremism-related charges that Belarusian authorities routinely use to persecute regime critics, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interior ministry added 24 new names to its official register of persons \u201cinvolved in extremist activities,\u201d taking the total of entries to 6,448, Pozirk <\/em>reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minsk City Executive Committee shut down the KinderVita charity foundation, which has assisted children with cancer since 2021, Pozirk <\/em>said. A video address to Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka requesting a revocation of this decision was later posted on TikTok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hrodna authorities evaluated the apartment of exiled rights defender U\u0142adzimir Chilmanovi\u010d, who had been sentenced to a prison term in Belarus without being present at the trial, Haradzienskaja Pravaabarona said. Earlier, his summer house was put up for auction, while the household appliances had already been sold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

State propaganda workers keep threatening exiled Belarusians over the celebrations of Freedom Day abroad. The state-controlled STV<\/em> channel aired footage of the Freedom Day rally in Vilnius on March 25, disclosing participants’ personal data. The videos were reportedly filmed by Ukrainian students, who produced them for a fee paid by unidentified individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of March 28, human rights defenders identified at least 908 political prisoners, but the real number is considerably higher because of many undocumented cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
