March 29, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), suspected of ties to the intelligence services of the regimes in Moscow and Minsk, continues its efforts to determine the amounts of the federal government\u2019s funding for projects in undemocratically ruled countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a recent parliamentary interpellation, the AfD requested detailed information on the implementation of more than 60 projects across multiple countries. The far-right MPs argued that some of the initiatives may amount to interference in other states\u2019 internal affairs and could conflict with principles of the efficient use of German public funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two of the projects concern Belarus. The first focuses on digital memorialization of Jewish heritage in Belarus and is being carried out by the Belarusian-Jewish Cultural Heritage Center based in Warsaw, the Goethe-Institut in Lithuania and the German Foreign Ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second project is implemented by dekoder.org<\/em>, featuring analytical articles by journalists in exile, most of them Belarusians, on events in the country as well as throughout Eastern Europe after 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, the German government classified information on its ongoing projects in Belarus sought by the AfD MPs, saying its commitment to transparency was limited by rules protecting confidential data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grant recipients and civil society representatives in Belarus operate under an extremely repressive authoritarian regime by Alaksandar Luka\u0161enka and other officials who are subject to European Union sanctions for human rights abuses, the German government said. Disclosure of foreign aid recipients and their German partners could put them at risk of reprisals, it noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, Belarusian police raided editorial offices and interrogated several editors of local periodicals over alleged contracts with the German embassy in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AfD politician J\u00f6rg Dornau was reportedly linked to Cybulka-Bie\u0142 company that used Belarusian political prisoners\u2019 labor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
