March 29, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>A military court in Moscow sentenced Belarusian national Illa Ala\u0161kievi\u010d and Anton Baklanov from Russia’s Vladimir province to 16 and 15 years in prison, respectively, Kommersant<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both men, aged 20, were convicted of carrying out a terrorist act that caused significant property damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The defendants contacted a pro-Ukraine supporter on the Telegram messaging app who offered them an equivalent of $1,480 for setting on fire the cab of a repair railway car at the Bykovo station in the Moscow province, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the defense lawyers said his defendant was an orphan, while the other had left home at 17. Both were reportedly seeking quick money to cover rent. An unidentified individual offered them payment to set fire to a railway repair car, posing as a representative of a company that stood to benefit from the act. However, the investigation and the court did not bother to verify this version, the lawyer noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second lawyer said the verdict was based on \u201cinvestigators\u2019 assumptions\u201d about alleged Ukrainian links and his client\u2019s motives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
