March 30, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has announced the visit of her aide Dzianis Ku\u010dynski, to Washington as she addressed a Belarus-themed roundtable at the Lithuanian Seimas today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian opposition will continue to engage with its American partners, explaining why it is important that no pressure be placed on Lithuania and European Union countries regarding their principled position on potash transit, the politician said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

American sanctions were imposed for human rights violations, while European ones were imposed for the war and hybrid attacks, she noted, arguing that European sanctions are \u201cmuch stronger\u201d and \u201cmust remain in place until real systemic change takes place in Belarus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf European sanctions are lifted now, it will only give [Alaksandar] \u0141uka\u0161enka and Russia more money for repression and war,\u201d the politician warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja said the ongoing prisoner releases negotiated by Washington are important, but stressed that a complete end to reprisals must be achieved. \u201cWe need full amnesty so that thousands of Belarusians in Poland and Lithuania can safely return home,\u201d she added. \u201cWe must insist on this and not encourage the dictator to take new hostages.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 19, \u0141uka\u0161enka freed 250 jailed dissidents following the talks with John Coale, US special envoy for Belarus. Later, the Belarusian ruler\u2019s press office reported that the US had lifted sanctions on Bie\u0142investbank and the Development Bank of Belarus, the finance ministry, Bie\u0142aruskalij and Belarusian Potash Company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania banned the transit of Belarusian fertilizers in early 2022 in line with US sanctions, while the European Union adopted similar restrictions later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, Lithuanian Foreign Minister K\u0119stutis Budrys stressed that Lithuania has not changed its position on the original causes of sanctions against Belarus, and he therefore sees no reason to lift them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
