April 1, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> It is impossible to significantly increase crude oil production in Belarus, Jaras\u0142a\u016d Hrybik of the National Academy of Sciences\u2019 Nature Management Institute told reporters in Minsk on April 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur president sometimes criticizes geologists: \u2018But I see that there must be three million [tons of annual production] out there,\u2019\u201d Hrybik said. \u201cThere cannot be three million when the target is 2.1 million. This is a realistic expectation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has repeatedly said he does not believe that Belarus lacks large oil reserves, urging geologists to intensify their search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Hrybik noted that prospectors have found no evidence of major new oil deposits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Domestic oil production has risen from 1.4 million tons per year a decade ago to around two million tons at present, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hrybik described the government\u2019s target of increasing output to 2.3 million tons by 2030 as a \u201cgeological challenge,\u201d given that Belarus \u201chas only one oil basin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
