April 2, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>A delegation from the Swedish army, led by General Michael Claesson, the supreme commander of the Swedish Armed Forces, visited the Jurgis Kybartas border post in Lithuania, the State Border Guard Service reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The delegation was briefed on the operations of the video surveillance control center and also visited the Lavori\u0161k\u0117s\u2013Kat\u0142o\u016dka border checkpoint along the shared border with Belarus to inspect the reinforced fence and surveillance systems. Lithuanian military personnel additionally showcased a range of anti-mobility equipment to the visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania has started boosting its border protections at the border with Belarus in response to a surge in irregular crossings by third-country foreigners since spring 2021, and later due to the heightened military threats from Moscow and Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, supported by the Belarusian authorities, Finland and Sweden applied to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Finland officially became a NATO member in April 2023, followed by Sweden in March 2024. Both countries had long maintained a policy of neutrality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
