April 7, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> If all political prisoners in Belarus are released through the efforts of Donald Trump, the president of the United States will be worthy of a Nobel prize, Belarusian opposition leader Sviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja said in an interview with Der Spiegel<\/em> published on April 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe US government works with both \u2018bad and \u2018good\u2019 guys, but it coordinates this effort [with Belarusian pro-democracy forces],\u201d Cichano\u016dskaja was quoted as saying. \u201cWe have never been afraid that they are acting behind our backs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked why it is Trump and not European politicians who has managed to secure the release of a large number of Belarusian political prisoners, Cichano\u016dskaja replied that Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka \u201cknows how to talk to European leaders.\u201d \u201cHe has done this for 30 years,\u201d she said. \u201cTrump\u2019s quick success is due to his unpredictability. I don\u2019t think that a European would be able to achieve it so quickly. That is why we are asking Europeans to let Trump do his job and not interfere. In the end, you hold stronger cards.\u201d She explained that \u201cEuropean sanctions are tougher on \u0141uka\u0161enka than the American ones.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Cichano\u016dskaja, pro-democracy forces are warning the European Union against lifting its sanctions prematurely. \u201cDon\u2019t commit a false start,\u201d she said. \u201cKeep your crucial, strong cards for systemic change in Belarus. [Follow] the formula: American sanctions in exchange for people\u2019s freedom, European ones [in exchange] for the country\u2019s freedom. This is a more difficult problem, but it is solvable for Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja stressed that she does not believe the US president is seeking \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s help to establish communication with Russian President Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think \u0141uka\u0161enka is in Trump\u2019s field of vision. Trump is focused on Iran, Venezuela, and Cuba \u2014 he has greater interests there. However, there is the US envoy for Belarus and other officials in the administration who genuinely care about the fate of prisoners. Trump is more interested in presenting this as a success story, without going into details. We are immensely grateful to him for that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know he receives a lot of criticism from my compatriots and other Europeans. But there are areas where the US government is acting correctly, and Belarus is one of them. Trump does not need \u0141uka\u0161enka to communicate with Putin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
