April 8, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>Germany is \u201cresponding to requests\u201d from Minsk for information regarding the criminal case of the genocide of the Belarusian people by providing archival documents, Valeryj Ta\u0142ka\u010do\u016d from the Belarusian Prosecutor General\u2019s Office has told news.by<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Office of the German Federal Public Prosecutor expressed regret over what had happened [during the Second World War], but it is difficult for me to assess how sincere those regrets are,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian prosecutors established contacts with their German counterparts after requesting relevant documents from public prosecutors\u2019 offices across European Union countries, Ta\u0142ka\u010do\u016d added, noting that the Baltic states and Poland ignored all of Belarus\u2019 requests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official agreed with the host\u2019s claim that \u201cin the Baltic states and other Western countries\u201d power is allegedly being taken over by \u201cthe descendants of Nazis who murdered the civilian population of Belarus.\u201d He claimed this was \u201cone of the reasons\u201d for the lack of cooperation, suggesting it was intended to conceal the actions of their ancestors, whom he accused of committing atrocities in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian authorities started instrumentalizing WW2 and memory politics following the 2020 political crisis in Belarus in an attempt to discredit the opposition by tying its symbols to Nazi collaborators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Courts held a series of trials targeting dead perpetrators of war crimes against Belarusians, while the government promoted the theory that the Belarusians suffered genocide at the hands of the Nazis and their collaborators during WW2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2021, Minsk passed a law criminalizing \u201cgenocide against the Belarusian people,\u201d a concept unknown to previous generations. Belarusian officials also prosecute dead Nazi criminals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Criminal Code carries a punishment of up to 10 years in prison for genocide denial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
