April 9, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has appointed D\u017amitryj \u017duk as information minister, transferring his predecessor Marat Marka\u016d to the culture ministry, the Belarusian ruler\u2019s press office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u017duk had previously served as editor in chief at the state-controlled SB. Belarus.Segodnya<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019re already a capable person, ideologically sound, and you know what needs to be done,\u201d \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s press office quoted him as saying. \u201cThat\u2019s why I have absolutely no objection to you trying yourself out in this position. Although I find it very regrettable when a practitioner like you moves into management.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marka\u016d\u2019s tenure as information minister lasted less than two years and was marked by blacklisted online information resources, censorship, propaganda and an expanding list of banned books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the official accused independent media of working to \u201cdestroy\u201d Belarus and pushing the country to a \u201cUkrainian scenario\u201d in 2020. \u201cWhen it was necessary to take drastic measures, we took them. Call it censorship if you please,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before his government role, Marka\u016d had served as top executive at the state-run ONT<\/em>\u00a0TV. He was known as a staunch \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s supporter. In 2021, he interviewed former opposition journalist Raman Pratasievi\u010d, who was captured after the forced landing of a Ryanair plane in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka also made several other appointments today, placing Andrej Mochar in charge of the state-run news agency BelTA. His predecessor Iryna Aku\u0142ovi\u010d will start diplomatic service at the Belarusian embassy in Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michai\u0142 Orda, former chairman of the pro-government Federation of Trade Unions, has been appointed the new head of Belarus\u2019 diplomatic mission in Mongolia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian ruler also approved several new regional officials, including deputy chairmen of the Viciebsk Regional Executive Committee: Alaksiej Hujda and Piotr Bielu\u015b. Other appointments in the Viciebsk region include Alena Babinskaja as new head to the Bras\u0142a\u016d district and Leanid Moj\u017eyk to the Or\u0161a district as well as Alaksandar \u010casnoj\u0107 in the Hrodna region\u2019s Voranava district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
