April 13, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will carry out a scheduled inspection at the Sosny nuclear research facility near Minsk on April 15, reported the press office of the emergency management ministry\u2019s Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department (Bie\u0142dziar\u017eatamnahlad).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inspection will be in accordance with the Agreement for the Application of Safeguards in Connection with Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the press office said. The inspectors will reportedly take physical inventory of nuclear material and audit the system of keeping accountancy records.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe IAEA is seeking to independently verify the state for compliance with its legal obligation of not using nuclear facilities not according to their purpose and not diverting nuclear material from peaceful use to the production of nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices,\u201d the press office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 19, the IAEA conducted inspections at the Sosny nuclear research facility and the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant. Similar checks were expected to take place in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IAEA has also scheduled an Operational Safety Review Team (OSART) mission for between May 4 and May 21 to evaluate the nuclear power plant\u2019s safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The construction of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant was completed in the fall of 2023. Russia\u2019s State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom) acted as the prime contractor in the project, financed with a Russian loan and reliant on Russian nuclear fuel. The plant\u2019s first unit has been supplying electricity to Belarusian consumers since November 2020, and the second one since May 2023. The units began commercial operation in June 2021 and November 2023, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities have recently announced plans to add a third unit to the plant and connect it to the power grid between 2035 and 2038. At the same time, they are not abandoning the idea of building a second nuclear power plant, in eastern Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experts say that Belarus has no use for much of the electricity generated by the Belarusian Power Plant and warn that the project has made Belarus even more dependent on Russia. Lithuania expresses grave concerns about the safety of the nuclear plant, which is situated close to its border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
