April 14, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The International Criminal Court’s (ICC) investigation into alleged crimes by the regime in Minsk is a path to justice rather than a symbolic step, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja told Canadian MPs in a video address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian pro-democracy forces expect Canada to play a more active role in holding the Belarusian regime accountable, the politician said yesterday as she presented her six-point plan for Belarus support to the Subcommittee on International Human Rights at the Canadian House of Commons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian opposition expects the ICC to conduct a thorough and professional investigation, review available evidence and identify those responsible for crimes committed against Belarusians, she stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician also expressed hope that the probe will result in arrest warrants, which would serve as a reminder to all officials involved that immunity is not permanent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ottawa could publicly support the investigation, share any evidence it holds with the ICC regarding the extraterritorial persecution of Belarusians and ensure protection for witnesses and victims currently in Canada, Cichano\u016dskaja added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, the Office of the Prosecutor of the ICC in The Hague announced the launch of an investigation into Lithuania\u2019s allegations that the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime committed transboundary crimes against humanity as part of its crackdown on opponents starting 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its referral to the ICC, Lithuania noted that there are sufficient grounds to believe that Belarus\u2019 security forces committed crimes against humanity under orders from high-ranking Belarusian political, security and military officials since May 1, 2020. They include deportation, persecution and other inhumane acts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
