April 15, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The office of Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has pledged readiness to cooperate with the European Humanities University in Vilnius (EHU) and international partners to ensure the continued operation of the university, the politician said on Telegram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja’s aide Dzianis Ku\u010dynski, an EHU alumnus, described the extremist designation of the exiled Belarusian university as an attack on the academic community and on academic freedom. Minsk\u2019s move can be interpreted as \u201ca slap in the face for Lithuania and proof that the regime continues to escalate tensions both within Belarus and in its relations with international partners and neighbors,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ku\u010dynski stressed the need to find solutions that will allow the university to \u201ccontinue its operations despite pressure from the Belarusian authorities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EHU was founded in Minsk in 1992, but the Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka government banned it in 2004, forcing it to relocate to Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to its website, EHU receives support from the European Union, the Nordic Council of Ministers, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, the governments of the Netherlands and Iceland, and other donors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
