April 20, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The European Union has no intention of changing its sanctions policy toward Minsk, opposition politician Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka has told Pozirk, <\/em>following the meeting of the Political Affairs Committee at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian politician said he raised the issue of new EU sanctions against Belarus with David O\u2019Sullivan, EU sanctions envoy, citing ongoing tensions on Belarus\u2019 borders with the bloc and rising regional security risks due to reports of increased military activity along the Belarus-Ukraine border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brussels is consistent in sanctions against Belarus, which mirror the restrictions against Russia, and does not plan to change this policy, \u0141atu\u0161ka said, citing O\u2019Sullivan\u2019s response. Recent United States moves to ease sanctions on Minsk reportedly raised concerns in the EU over potential loopholes in the broader sanctions regime against Russia, he added, commenting on the conversation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141atu\u0161ka added that he told O\u2019Sullivan that sanctions should remain in place until the Belarusian authorities change their domestic and foreign policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past few years, democratic countries have imposed multiple restrictions on Belarus over human rights abuses, alleged vote rigging in the 2020 presidential election, a brutal crackdown on protesters, the forced landing of a Ryanair flight, a migration crisis at the European Union border, as well as support of Russia’s war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last month, Washington lifted sanctions on Bie\u0142investbank, the Development Bank of Belarus, the finance ministry, Bie\u0142aruskalij and Belarusian Potash Company following the release of 250 designated political prisoners, negotiated by John Coale, US special envoy for Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
