April 22, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The opposition transition cabinet has promised to provide psychological and legal support to students of the Vilnius-based European Humanities University (EHU), recently branded an “extremist” group in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cabinet stressed that anyone linked to EHU should avoid travelling to Belarus, citing recommendations from rights defenders and digital rights groups. Students can seek guidance on personal safety and travel, risks to themselves and their families, as well as options for transferring to other universities, it said, listing Marharyta Vorychava, the cabinet\u2019s representative for youth policy, as the primary point of contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those in Belarus or planning to travel there should avoid carrying any documents that could link them to EHU, including student IDs, certificates or branded items, and should not present EHU degrees to state bodies or employers, the cabinet noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It further advised Belarusians to clear their digital footprint by removing EHU-related content from electronic devices and reviewing social media activity, including mentions, followed content and reposts and possibly hide or delete any references to the blacklisted university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cabinet also advised against mentioning studies at EHU when dealing with Belarusian officials or law enforcers and urged caution in interactions with suspicious online accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EHU was founded in Minsk in 1992, but Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s government banned it in 2004, forcing the institution to relocate to Lithuania. According to its website, EHU receives support from the EU, the Nordic Council of Ministers, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, the governments of the Netherlands and Iceland, and other donors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court of Belarus designated EHU as an \u201cextremist\u201d group, accusing the exiled university of providing support to radical politicized groups and destructive foreign NGOs and being used by state security agencies to cause damage to Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU and Lithuania, which hosts the exiled university, condemned Minak\u2019s decision as politically motivated and unfounded. Diplomats said the move is unprecedented, marking the first time a higher education institution legally operating in another country has been designated an \u201cextremist\u201d group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vilnius pledged to support EHU as a pillar of academic freedom, critical thinking and democratic values, free from political influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
