April 22, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Opposition politician Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka met Mathieu Mori, secretary general at the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, to discuss assistance to Belarusian emigrants by local authorities in the CoE member states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141atu\u0161ka pointed out the difficulties faced by elderly Belarusians who were forced to leave the country, fearing politically-motivated reprisals, and are now unable to receive their pensions in European countries. A possible solution could involve social support programs implemented by local authorities, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The parties agreed that municipal authorities could provide legalization and social services, such as housing provision or targeted aid, the Coordination Council\u2019s press office reported. Mori reportedly cited the example of Italy\u2019s Tuscany, where support programs are in place and communication has been established with Belarusian pro-democracy forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0Congress of Local and Regional Authorities\u00a0is the pan-European political body representing 46 CoE member states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
