May 21, Pozirk. <\/strong>A judge in Hrodna sentenced Maksim \u0160abucki, ex-fighter of the Kastu\u015b Kalino\u016dski Regiment and former member of the opposition Coordination Council,\u00a0to 19 years in prison without the defendant being present at the trial, the Viasna Human Rights Center reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proceedings opened at the Hrodna Regional Court on January 26 and concluded yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exiled \u0160abucki faced 18 serious charges that the government often uses to prosecute its opponents, including conspiracy to seize power, forming a criminal group, calling for sanctions, extremism and participation in a foreign conflict. Belarusian authorities said he used his YouTube and Telegram channels to set up extremist groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sentence also includes a fine of 157,500 rubels (about $57,700).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0160abucki fought alongside Ukrainian forces against Russia from late 2022 to November 2023. He was elected to the Coordination Council in 2024 but left it in January 2025. Before fleeing Belarus, \u0160abucki had worked as a police officer until 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another sentence passed yesterday in Belarus, without the defendant being present, targeted Mika\u0142aj Tarasienka from Mahilo\u016d, accused of slander, participation in an armed conflict abroad, as well as insulting and defaming Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
