May 22, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> During yesterday\u2019s nuclear drill, missile and air forces focused on the \u201cdispersal and preparation for launching strikes using special munitions,\u201d Pavie\u0142 Muraviejka, chief of the General Staff overseeing Belarus\u2019 participation in the exercise, told state media on May 21. He praised the troops\u2019 \u201chigh-quality\u201d performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Muraviejka said that a Belarusian missile battery had carried out a precise Iskander missile strike at a Russian training ground and expressed hope that \u201cthe next generation of missilers\u201d would learn how to use nuclear weapons. According to the defense ministry, the live-fire drill took place at Russia\u2019s Kapustin Yar training ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He made it clear that the exercise is not yet over. \u201cTroops have to move to new position areas, assemble and later march to their permanent bases. . . The marches will cover long distances, rugged terrain, and some of them will be carried out at night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and Vladimir Putin observed the exercise yesterday from command posts in their respective countries. The Belarusian ruler watched \u201can electronic launch\u201d at a missile brigade command post in Asipovi\u010dy, Minsk region, the defense ministry reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difference between an \u201celectronic\u201d and a live-fire launch is that the missile does not leave the launcher\u2019s guideway, Brigade Commander Alaksandar Kra\u016dco\u016d was quoted as saying. \u201cAll crews have fully practiced the whole cycle and all modes. The combat and training cycles are performed absolutely in the same way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian troops were trained to transport nuclear munitions to firing positions and load missiles onto delivery systems, including Russian-made Iskander-M missile systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to investigative journalists, Russian nuclear warheads are likely stored at an upgraded military depot near Asipovi\u010dy. Belarusian officials have refused to confirm or deny the location. There is also a training ground about seven kilometers outside Asipovi\u010dy and an Iskander-M missile site in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In December 2024, the Belarusian ruler publicly stated that Belarus was hosting \u201cdozens\u201d of Russian nuclear warheads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus hosts at least two types of delivery systems for nuclear munitions: Iskander-M short-range ballistic missile systems and modified Su-25 attack aircraft capable of carrying free-fall nuclear gravity bombs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Su-25s are reportedly based in Lida, near the border with Poland. Iskander-M missile systems have also been spotted in Ma\u010duli\u0161\u010dy, Minsk region, and Ziabra\u016dka, Homiel region, near the border with Ukraine, according to PAX Consulting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Belarusian forces have been trained to operate the delivery systems, the nuclear warheads themselves remain under Russia\u2019s exclusive operational control and custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
