May 22, Pozirk. <\/strong>Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has urged democratic countries to recognize transnational repressions as a serious security threat as she addressed the Globsec forum in Prague, her press office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dictatorships evolve, learn from each other and cooperate globally against democracies, she argued, calling for stronger international coordination in response to these challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEven fleeing dictatorship, you may still not be safe. Even having international protection or asylum status, you are not safe,\u201d the politician said, referring to the experiences of Belarusian dissidents. \u201cThe regime can still threaten your family. Cancel your passport. Spy on you. Hack your phone. Open criminal cases in absentia. Use Interpol against you. Spread propaganda about you. Or even physically attack you abroad. This is what transnational repression means.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities systematically target sactivist, journalists, artists and political experts who criticize the authorities or support Ukraine, often extending persecution to Belarus-based family members, Cichano\u016dskaja said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dictatorships are becoming more technologically advanced and more coordinated internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Democratic societies need to develop mechanisms to respond to transnational repressions by close cooperation, ensuring better protection for exiled journalists and activists, simplifying legalization for people fleeing authoritarian regimes along with sanctions, criminal investigations, visa bans and accountability for perpetrators, she said. The politician also called for depriving dictatorships of access to international mechanisms such as Interpol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja called for support in raising the issue of transnational repression at international forums and organizations, including the United Nations General Assembly and the United Nations Security Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
