May 25, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>Minsk\u2019s contacts with Washington are \u201csetting the tone and helping awaken our colleagues in Europe,\u201d Belarusian Deputy Foreign Minister Ihar Siekreta told news.by<\/em> in a comment on yesterday\u2019s phone call between French President Emmanuel Macron and Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is easier to engage in dialogue with the United States than with the European Union, which has 27 member states, the diplomat added. \u201cWith Washington, we know who we\u2019re dealing with,\u201d he said. \u201cThere is a single decision-making center there. The decisions made between Minsk and Washington are implemented and take shape, whether in the form of lifting sanctions or resolving issues regarding the supply of certain products.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contacts with the United States remain ongoing, with some of the work also conducted behind closed doors, Siekreta said. \u201cA fairly wide range of issues is being discussed, including regional security, which the leaders of Belarus and France spoke about yesterday,\u201d he added, describing the phone call as evidence of \u201cgrowing interest in Belarus\u2019 role and place in Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka has been mentioning a possibility of a \u201cgrand bargain\u201d with Washington since last October. Later, he declared readiness to conclude a \u201cgrand bargain\u201d with the US, provided that \u201cour interests\u201d are respected. He did not specify his exact demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March, Minsk freed 250 regime critics, marking the largest release since talks with Washington started. \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s press office reported that the US lifted sanctions on two Belarusian banks, Bie\u0142invest and the Development Bank of the Republic of Belarus and the Ministry of Finance of Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
