May 25, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will visit Lithuania tomorrow following recent drone incursions into the Baltic states, POLITICO<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official is expected to hold a series of top-level meetings to coordinate the European Union\u2019s response, it noted. While demonstrating \u201csolidarity with the Baltic states,\u201d the visit will focus on improving defense capabilities through major EU financing schemes, the report said, citing one the sources who spoke on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week, an air raid alert was activated in Lithuania on two different occasions in response to drones approaching from Belarus. The incidents prompted Vilnius to scramble NATO fighter jets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russia and Belarus are responsible for drones endangering the lives and security of people in the EU , von der Leyen said on May 20. \u201cA threat against one member state is a threat against our entire union,\u201d she stressed on X. \u201cEurope will respond with unity and strength. We will continue reinforcing the security of our Eastern flank with strong collective defence and preparedness at every level.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Moscow considers operations \u201cto the south and north of Belarus \u2013 either against Ukraine\u2019s Chernihiv\u2013Kyiv region or against one of the NATO countries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few days later, the Belarusian defense ministry announced the launch of a drill in which Belarus and Russia would rehearse the delivery of nuclear munitions and preparations for their use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February 2022, Russia started a full-scale war against Ukraine in which the Belarusian authorities supported the Kremlin, allowing Russian troops to attack Ukraine from Belarus on multiple occasions and supplying arms to Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
