May 27, Pozirk.<\/strong> Some 440 Belarusians have died fighting for Russia against Ukraine, opposition politician Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka said, citing data from the Coordinating Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141atu\u0161ka visited the agency\u2019s office in Kyiv together with opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja on May 26. He said that at least 2,871 Belarusians have signed contracts with the Russian military to fight in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opposition also has information about 90 Belarusians killed in action while fighting alongside the Ukrainian Armed Forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141atu\u0161ka and other members of the Belarusian delegation held a video call with three Belarusian prisoners of war from the Homiel region who are being held by Ukraine. One of them said he had informed a Belarusian military enlistment office that he planned to go to Russia to sign a military contract to fight in Ukraine. The politician said this suggests that the Belarusian regime is helping Russia recruit soldiers in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All three prisoners said they had gone to Ukraine for money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, \u0141atu\u0161ka said, Belarus helps Russian troops by repairing equipment, providing training and even hosting camps for prisoners of war. In an interview with Belsat TV<\/em>, he said there are six such sites in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commenting on the visit to the headquarters, Cichano\u016dskaja said that the Belarusian delegation had discussed a possible exchange involving Vasil Vieramiej\u010dyk, a former volunteer fighter for Ukraine serving a 13-year prison sentence in Belarus, and other imprisoned former volunteer fighters, in return for prisoners of war who fought on the Russian side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUnfortunately, certain restrictions linked to international conventions complicate the exchange of civilians for military prisoners involving a third country,\u201d Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s press office said. It added that neither the Belarusian regime nor Russia is interested in securing the release of Belarusian prisoners held by Ukraine, including the three soldiers who took part in the video call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
