{"id":189598,"date":"2026-05-28T13:51:37","date_gmt":"2026-05-28T10:51:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/189598\/"},"modified":"2026-05-28T13:51:39","modified_gmt":"2026-05-28T10:51:39","slug":"relatives-appeal-against-suspected-death-squad-members-acquittal","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/189598\/","title":{"rendered":"Relatives appeal against suspected death squad member\u2019s acquittal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>May<\/strong><strong> 28, <\/strong><strong><em>Pozirk<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>.<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>A court in Switzerland\u2019s St. Gallen on June 24 will consider an appeal against the acquittal of Juryj Hara\u016dski, a former elite police officer suspected of involvement in the abduction and murder of Belarus\u2019 opposition figures,<em>Deutsche Welle<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The appeal has been filed by relatives of the disappeared and the human rights organizations Viasna, TRIAL International and the International Federation for Human Rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hara\u016dski, who admitted to being a member of a government-run death squad in Belarus that allegedly abducted and killed Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s opponents in 1999, was acquitted September 28, 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The judge&nbsp;concluded that the ex-SOBR member might&nbsp;have been involved in crimes but his role remains unidentified. According to the judge, he may have recounted stories&nbsp;that he heard from his colleagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Swiss law did not allow prosecutors to charge the former police officer with more serious crimes, such as murder or complicity in murder, because they were allegedly committed in Belarus, so he was instead charged with enforced disappearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, media reported that Hara\u016dski admitted to being a member of a government-run death squad that allegedly abducted and killed former Interior Minister Juryj Zacharanka, businessman Anatol Kraso\u016dski and opposition politician Viktar Han\u010dar in 1999.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He&nbsp;apologized to the family members and friends of his alleged victims.
