June 4, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusian border guards discovered a dead foreigner “of Arab appearance” two days ago in the Viciebsk region’s Bras\u0142a\u016d district, some 50 meters from the Latvian border, the State Border Committee reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officers \u201cdiscovered drag marks leading from the European border fence toward the location of the deceased,\u201d and the barbed-wire barrier that had previously blocked the animal gate had been dismantled, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The examination of the body revealed \u201csigns of physical abuse and the use of a stun gun,\u201d border authorities added, noting that the deceased did not have any documents or a phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Investigative Committee ordered a forensic medical examination to determine the cause of death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 79 people have died along Belarus\u2019 border with Latvia, Lithuania and Poland since the beginning of the migration crisis in 2021, according to the Belarusian official data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk consistently blames Polish, Lithuanian, and Latvian officers for pushbacks and the suffering endured by third-country nationals trying to cross from Belarus into the European Union to seek asylum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, a report<\/a> by Oxfam and the Egala human rights group, released last year, stated that migrants attempting to cross into the EU from Belarus face pushbacks and violence on both sides of the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis along the Belarusian-EU border has continued since spring 2021, after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, indicated that Minsk would no longer prevent people from Africa and Asia from traveling through Belarus to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors describe the situation as a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
