June 8, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Viasna Human Rights Center has drawn up a list of 173 individuals who it says are in a particularly vulnerable and high-risk situation among Belarus\u2019 871 known political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They include persons suffering from serious medical conditions; individuals who were under the age of 18 when they committed their alleged crimes; people with three or more young children; inmates undergoing compulsory psychiatric treatment; and people who are being held incommunicado or whose prison terms have been prolonged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to human rights defenders, at least 60 political prisoners suffer from serious medical problems, eight have disabilities, 30 are over the age of 60 and six suffer from mental disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thirty-three political prisoners are in a \u201cdifficult family situation\u201d as single parents, parents of many children and parents whose spouses are also political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The oldest political prisoner is Michai\u0142 Lapiejka, a 77-year-old resident of Mahilo\u016d who is receiving compulsory psychiatric treatment for allegedly insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
