June 10, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The Belarusians are a normal European nation that has been taken hostage, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja told members of the Czech Republic\u2019s Senate in Prague on June 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at a meeting of the upper parliamentary house\u2019s committee on foreign affairs, defense and security, Cichano\u016dskaja recalled historic ties between the Belarusian and the Czech people and described the Czech Republic as an inspiration for Belarusian freedom fighters. She noted that the Belarus service of Radio Free Europe\/Radio Liberty broadcasts from Prague, and played up the role of former Czech President V\u00e1clav Havel for keeping Belarus on the international agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja expressed gratitude to the Czech Republic for receiving Belarusians fleeing their home country in the wake of the 2020 post-election protest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also welcomed the Czech Republic\u2019s support for Ukraine in its war against Russia, and called for distinguishing between the Belarusian people and Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja hailed the Senate\u2019s resolution recognizing Belarus\u2019 Committee for State Security (KGB) and the interior ministry\u2019s notorious Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and Corruption (HUBAZiK) as \u201cterrorist organizations.\u201d She urged the Czech Republic to join an agreement on the establishment of a Special Tribunal to bring Vladimir Putin and Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka to justice for the war against Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja asked Czech authorities to step up support for exiled Belarusians, including the independent media and pro-democracy activists. She called for more visas and educational opportunities for Belarusians and for supporting cultural projects designed to strengthen Belarusian national identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja arrived in Prague on Tuesday evening and was expected to hold a series of top-level meetings on June 10 and 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She discussed a planned move to simplify visa procedures for relatives of Belarusians residing in the Czech Republic with Czech Foreign Minister Petr Macinka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A regulation to that effect is expected to be released in a few days, according to the Belarusian politician\u2019s press office.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja also met with Czech President Petr Pavel at Prague Castle, she said<\/a> on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
