June 17, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Opposition politician Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka has appealed to the European External Action Service (EEAS) to advise commercial banks against denying their services to Belarusian residence permit or asylum seekers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian emigrants have found themselves in a \u201clegal trap,\u201d unable to renew their expired passports through Belarusian embassies and forced to wait for between six and 24 months for decisions on their applications, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While they are waiting, banks block access to mobile apps, cards and other banking services for \u201cthe most vulnerable category of Belarusians\u201d because of \u201can excessively cautious interpretation of regulations,\u201d the appeal says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141atu\u0161ka asks the EEAS to issue official guidance that would ensure applicants for residence permits or asylum receive the same treatment as actual holders of residence permits. He suggests recognizing a foreigner\u2019s travel document and the temporary identity certificate issued when applying for asylum as sufficient grounds for providing banking services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
