June 28, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Latvia has reported more than 2,000 attempts by third-country nationals to cross the border from Belarus for the second month in a row.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After registering 2,432 incidents in May, it has reported 2,081 attempts in the first 27 days of June, including as many as 153 in the last two days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The country reported more than 2,000 attempts for two months in a row in September and October 2023 \u2013 3,172 and 2,866, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Border-crossing incidents were rising from none in January, to 20 in February, 302 in March and 1,700 in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In all this year, Latvia recorded 6,535 irregular entry incidents, followed by Lithuania with 861 and Poland with 229.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people eager to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
