June 29, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Poland maintains working channels of communication with the Belarusian security services despite Minsk\u2019s close alignment with Moscow, Pawe\u0142 Szota, head of Poland’s Foreign Intelligence Agency, has told Rzeczpospolita<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intelligence services can communicate even when diplomatic channels are limited, he said, arguing that such contacts serve Poland\u2019s security interests and may help slow Belarus\u2019 increasing dependence on Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The intelligence chief described Russia as the primary threat to Poland, saying Moscow is testing NATO\u2019s resolve by gradually pushing the boundaries of what the alliance is willing to tolerate. He also warned that Russia could stage provocations in the Baltic states in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Szota added that the extradition to Poland of a Moroccan national suspected of killing Polish soldier Mateusz Sitek is a key issue in Warsaw\u2019s dialogue with Minsk. “In my opinion, without progress on this issue, it will be difficult to take further steps toward improving Polish-Belarusian relations,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mohamed Addamrou, a citizen of Morocco who is suspected of fatally wounding Sitek at the border with Belarus in May 2024, is staying in Belarus, the Warsaw District Prosecutor\u2019s Office said earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 140 witnesses in Poland and abroad have been reportedly questioned in the investigation, and formal charges were brought against Addamrou as far back as July 21, 2025. After establishing that the man resides in Belarus, the prosecutor\u2019s office filed an extradition request with Belarusian authorities. However, the investigation had to be suspended because the suspect\u2019s whereabouts have been designated a \u201clong-term procedural obstacle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twenty-one-year-old Sitek died on June 6, 2024, after he was stabbed while on patrol duty by a man attempting to cross from Belarus as part of a large group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk has refused to cooperate with Warsaw in the investigation. Poland subsequently established a buffer zone at the Belarusian border, restricting access to some areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
