July 1, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The neighboring European Union countries prevented at least 7,886 attempts by undocumented third-country foreigners to cross irregularly via Belarus in the first six months of 2026, according to Pozirk\u2019s<\/em> analysis of border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of attempts has fallen significantly from 2025 and 2024, when 21,441 and 23,049 attempts at irregular crossing were recorded in the first half of the year, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the first six months of 2026, Latvia was the main destination for undocumented migrants with 6,785 attempted crossings from Belarus (86 percent), followed by Lithuania with 872 attempts (11.1 percent) and Poland with 229 attempts (2.9 percent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June, Belarus\u2019 western neighbors thwarted at least 2,439 attempts at irregular crossing, with Latvia accounting for 95.6 percent, Lithuania for 3.9 percent and Poland for 0.6 percent of the total number of attempted crossings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As many as 2,583 such incidents were reported in May, 2,195 in April, 6,172 in June 2025, and 4,236 in June 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people eager to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
