July 14, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s press office has maintained its antagonistic stance toward the French leadership despite President Emmanuel Macron\u2019s phone call with the Belarusian ruler in May and the subsequent visit to Minsk by France\u2019s intelligence chief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its Bastille Day greeting, the press office addressed \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s message to the \u201cordinary citizens of France,\u201d a formula it routinely uses in messages to so-called \u201cunfriendly\u201d countries. By contrast, greetings to \u201cfriendly\u201d states are typically addressed to their leaders by name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the message, \u0141uka\u0161enka expressed hope for the restoration of ties \u201cacross the board.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before their May conversation, \u0141uka\u0161enka had not communicated with Macron since February 26, 2022, two days after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

France and the European Union do not recognize \u0141uka\u0161enka as Belarus\u2019 legitimate president, and Belarus has officially designated France an unfriendly state. During his talks with Macron and the French president\u2019s envoy, Nicolas Lerner, head of France\u2019s Directorate-General for External Security, in May, the Belarusian ruler reportedly sought relief from EU sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus is holding at least seven French nationals in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
